What Billy Pay does, what bank data it uses and why, who stands behind it, and how to stop it — in plain language, in one place.

1. What Billy Pay does

Billy Pay is a mobile app for splitting shared costs — flat expenses, group trips, dinners — and settling them. You add a bill, choose how it splits, and the app keeps one shared running total of who owes what. When you're ready to square up, Billy Pay initiates a bank transfer from your account to the person you owe, using open banking. It is not a bank, a wallet, or a credit product: no money is ever held by us.

2. Who we are

Provider
Billy Pay Limited, a company registered in New Zealand. We build and operate the app.
Open banking partner
Akahu, an accredited New Zealand open banking provider, handles the connection between Billy Pay and your bank.

3. What bank data we access, and why

Account details and balances
So we can show you which account you're paying from and confirm a settlement can go through.
Transactions
So bills can be matched to real spending and settlements confirmed as received, without anyone taking screenshots.
Payee verification
So we can check the account you're sending money to belongs to the person you think it does.

We request the narrowest set of permissions the app needs. We never see your internet banking username or password, and we don't use your data for advertising or sell it.

4. How the connection works

  1. You choose your bank in Billy Pay and are handed to Akahu's secure connection flow.
  2. You log in and approve the specific permissions you're granting. This happens outside Billy Pay.
  3. Akahu issues a revocable access token. Billy Pay receives only the data those permissions cover.
  4. You can review or revoke the connection at any time, from Billy Pay or from Akahu.

5. Payments

Every payment is initiated by you and confirmed with your PIN before it leaves your account. There are no automatic or recurring debits, and no standing authority. Payments are ordinary New Zealand bank transfers, so they clear on your bank's normal processing times. If a payee's account can't be verified, we'll tell you before you send anything.

6. What it costs

Billy Pay is free to download and free to use for splitting, tracking and settling. There is no subscription and no per-payment fee. If we ever introduce a paid feature, it will be clearly priced and optional, and we'll tell you before it applies to you. Your bank's own fees, if any, still apply.

7. Stopping access

In the app
Account → Connected banks → Disconnect. Access ends immediately.
Through Akahu
Revoke Billy Pay's access from Akahu's consent portal — this works even if you've deleted the app.
Delete your account
Account → Delete account. This disconnects your banks and removes your profile, once outstanding balances are settled.

8. How we keep you safe

Your account is protected by mobile verification and a PIN. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and internal access is limited and logged. We monitor for unusual activity and will contact you if we see something that looks wrong. Billy Pay will never ask for your internet banking password, and will never ask you to move money to "keep it safe" — if someone claiming to be us does, it's a scam.

9. If something goes wrong

Contact us through the contact form or at info@billypay.co.nz — we acknowledge within 2 working days and aim to resolve complaints within 20. If a payment went to the wrong place, tell us and your bank as soon as you notice.

If you're not satisfied with our response, you can escalate to our external dispute resolution scheme, or — for privacy matters — to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner at privacy.org.nz. Concerns about the bank connection itself can also be raised with Akahu.
